Trocaire Begins “Jubilee Year of Mercy”

The entire Trocaire community is invited to celebrate the beginning of the “Jubilee Year of Mercy” on our campus next week.

A ceremony called “Opening the Doors of Mercy” will take place in The Commons at noon on Monday, Feb. 1. Following the ceremony, at approximately 12:30 p.m., cake will be served in the foyer outside Commons.

As proclaimed by Pope Francis, we are all asked to reflect on the virtue of mercy over the next year.

“To live consciously ‘in the heart of mercy’ is to live in the heart of God,” said Bob Shearn, Trocaire’s director of Mission, Ministry and Service. “It is to open our lives to the unfailing love and mercy of God; it is to receive the grace to love as we have been loved and so be bearers of God’s mercy in a violent and broken world.”

The Jubilee Year has given Trocaire—which means ‘mercy’ in Gaelic and was founded by the Sisters of Mercy—a unique opportunity to “live our mission” in ways that deepen our sense of identity and strengthen our witness to God, Sheamer 2rn explained.

A Jubilee planning committee has put together a schedule of events spanning the spring semester to help facilitate our active participation in the Jubilee. Activities are scheduled in four areas: prayer and reflection; education; advocacy for justice and peace; and direct service to the needy in our community and beyond.

Sign-ups for various events will be located in the foyer, just outside the Commons.  The first Trocaire-sponsored service event is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 13, at Habitat for Humanity (location to be determined).
