The Trocaire community is invited to attend a 9:30 a.m. prayer service on Monday, Sept. 11 around the flag pole in the courtyard, in remembrance of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. The service will be followed by a moment of silence in honor of all those who lost their lives that day.
Following the 9/11 commemoration event, all are invited to the grand opening of Trocaire’s updated Student Veterans Lounge in room 215. Formerly the Nurse Tutoring Room, the space has been transformed into a haven for all veteran, active duty/reserve service member and dependent students.
“This will be a space for them to convene together, a place they can call their own and a space where they really can have conversation and connect,” explained Thomas Vane, director of Student Engagement. “The space will have computer stations, lounge furniture, a table where they can work, a mini-fridge and coffee machine, and veteran-specific information & resources.”
Vane said the philosophy for the change reflects the mission of the Student Affairs Division, and a re-commitment to the college’s proud history of being a military-friendly institution.
“We are providing services from a caring and student-centered perspective in the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy, and are committed to meeting our student veterans’ needs,” he said. “This lounge will help encourage student success, as veterans tend to have a strong sense of community when they are around each other. This space will create a welcoming and comfortable environment for our vets, giving them the understanding that Trocaire is where they belong.”
