Linda Kerwin, CST, RN, M.A., M.S.N., Ed.D., director of Trocaire College’s Surgical Technology program, was appointed as a Practitioner Commissioner Representing Education Programs for the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
In this new Commissioner position, Dr. Kerwin will represent “practitioners” in the professions whose educational programs are accredited by CAAHEP. She will also serve on the CAAHEP Board of Directors which is composed of 15 members, who are elected by and from among the Commissioners. The Board is the accrediting body of CAAHEP that awards or denies accreditation after review of accreditation recommendations made by the Committees on Accreditation. It is also the primary governing body that oversees the business of CAAHEP and implements the mission and vision as adopted by the Commission.
Practitioner Commissioner qualifications include: graduating from a CAAHEP accredited program, employment in the field for which he/she was trained, a willingness to represent on the Board of Directors, and demonstration of active involvement in his/her health science field.
The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is a programmatic postsecondary accrediting agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and carries out its accrediting activities in cooperation with 19 review committees (Committees on Accreditation). CAAHEP currently accredits over 2100 entry level education programs in 23 health science professions.
Dr. Kerwin has been employed at Trocaire College for 12 years, and has served as the director of the Surgical Technology program since 2005. She also teaches perioperative nursing classes and serves on numerous college committees.
