Trocaire College will see 172 students walk across the stage and receive their diplomas at its Fall 2017 Commencement ceremony, to be held on Friday, Dec. 15 at the SUNY University at Buffalo Center for the Arts. Kaleida Health Senior Vice President, Chief of Staff Michael P. Hughes is the featured speaker for the evening.
Hughes was recruited to Kaleida in 2004. He is responsible for the hospital system’s external affairs, including marketing, communications, and government affairs. He also oversees campus development, construction, real estate, planning and parking.
Kaleida is Western New York’s largest employer and largest provider of health care services. It is also the system of the new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital of Buffalo—formerly Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo—which in November completed a momentous move from its historic Bryant Street home of more than a century to its new location on the Buffalo Medical Campus at 818 Ellicott St.
Prior to joining Kaleida Health, Hughes served as the public affairs and marketing manager for Rural/Metro Medical Services, a national ambulance company. He has completed Harvard Business School’s executive program, concentrating on health care management, and earned an MBA from Medaille College as well as bachelor’s degree in communication from Canisius College.
Hughes has been named to Buffalo Business First’s “Healthcare 50” list, which acknowledges the top healthcare leaders in Western New York, and, in 2005, was named a Business First “40 Under 40” award winner. He is also a graduate of Leadership Buffalo and the Buffalo FBI’s Citizen’s Academy. In addition, he has won numerous awards from International MarCom, the Healthcare Marketing Report and the Western New York Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.
Active in the community, Hughes was appointed in 2008 to the Board of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA). He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Buffalo Place, the Buffalo Police Athletic League, Mercy Flight and the West Seneca Zoning Board of Appeals.
“We are honored that Michael Hughes will be delivering the Fall 2017 commencement message to our graduates,” said Kathleen Saunders, Trocaire’s chief student affairs officer. “He was instrumental in the recent planning, development and opening of the new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital, and he volunteers on numerous boards, committees and community-based organizations. Through his work and service, Mr. Hughes exemplifies the Mercy tradition, which makes him an excellent role model for our students and an ideal speaker for this year’s commencement.”
