Trocaire College Issues Statement on Executive Order

Institution stands in solidarity with ACCU and Sisters of Mercy

BUFFALO, NEW YORK – February 1, 2017 – Trocaire College released the following statement today:

Trocaire College is in full support of the statement made by the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) in regard to the recent order signed by the president related to immigration.

On January 29, the ACCU expressed its strong opposition to the Executive Order signed by President Donald J. Trump concerning U.S. immigration policy. Trocaire College stands in solidarity with this organization and other Catholic and higher education organizations across the nation that recognize the moral obligation of our country to assist those who are fleeing violence and persecution taking place in their native countries. Supporting presidents from both the United States and other countries affirmed the document by adding their signatures to the statement and signatories continue to be added.

In addition to supporting the statement made by the ACCU, Trocaire College is also in solidarity with our founders, the Sisters of Mercy, who on January 26 called on legislators to push back against President Trump’s announcement on immigration and the U.S.-Mexico border.

“Our heritage encourages us not to simply stand by as immigrants, refugees and other vulnerable groups are targeted. Mercy stands in solidarity with them and will continue to serve and defend immigrants and refugees in their local communities. We are also proud of Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown’s continued support for our city’s refugee and immigrant population. We have been incredibly lucky to see firsthand the positive transformation of our communities as immigrants settle here in Western New York, some becoming students at Trocaire, and also the amazing support that organizations such as Jericho Road Community Health Center offer those in need of help and justice. We support our students taking part in volunteer or service learning activities with meaningful organization such as this, and are committed to making sure that our college community is welcoming, inclusive, and prepares students for service in the universal community,” said President Bassam M. Deeb, Ph.D.

Pope Francis has said that “authentic hospitality is our greatest security against hateful acts of terrorism.” Trocaire College is committed to celebrating the value of diversity within higher education, and reaffirms the commitment of the institution to embracing people of all faiths and cultures. Catholic higher education (in the U.S.) was founded precisely to serve the children of Catholic immigrants who in their own time were excluded from higher education. This is a legacy that Trocaire College proudly pledges to continue for students from all walks of life.
