On Tuesday, May 16th, 230 new Trocaire College graduates joined the ranks of our alumni family.
The Spring 2017 Commencement ceremony took place at the SUNY University at Buffalo Center for the Arts. Including those who walked across the stage in December, Western New York gained 360 new Trocaire-educated professionals in the 2016-2017 academic year.
John R. Koelmel, president of OnCore Golf, a Buffalo-based golf ball manufacturer, served as the ceremony’s featured speaker. In a rousing talk, he spoke to the graduates about living a life that is truly worthwhile.
“Life is more of an adventure than a journey,” he said. “Dare to be great, to make a real difference for the benefit of others.”
Health Information Technology graduate Ky Ly was the student speaker, and he delivered an emotional address about growing up as an immigrant in Buffalo. In his speech, Ky paid tribute to his mother and how her hard work and sacrifices allowed him to achieve his dreams. He also spoke to his fellow students, many of whom faced their own set of hardships as they worked to complete their educations.
“Whether you have come from war-torn lands, broken homes…whether you were blessed with a child early in your life, or needed to enhance your skill set, you never gave up. You never gave in to the pressures around you and the doubters closest to you. This diploma represents your advancement into your respective fields, as well as, a smile in the face of adversity and negativity.”
